Great Britain and Ireland boast a rich variety of breeds of pony, some of which still inhabit the mountains or moorlands where they originated. Most of these are undeniably breeds which mankind has produced, through deliberate design and skilled husbandry or almost by accident through indiscriminate cross-breeding. The Exmoor pony seems to be different: nature appears to have been the dominant force in shaping this animal (Baker 1993).
