Ladybirds are one of the most popular groups of insects. Their bright colours, and their beneficial habit of eating plant pests, such as aphids, have endeared them to people for centuries. Our own name for this group of beetles, ‘the ladybirds’, illustrates a religious connection, for they are named after Our Lady, the Virgin Mary. They are Her birds.
