As our culture has changed over time so have our perceptions of many wild animals. Whales, once purely of economic interest, are now valued as intelligent animals with complex social and communication systems. Wolves, once routinely trapped, shot and poisoned, are now being reintroduced in some countries in recognition of their role in natural ecosystems. Not only do perceptions about species vary over time but they may also vary between differnet sectors of society.
