The last four decades have seen the extinction of three species of dragonfly in the British Isles, and at least a third of the remaining species are considered to be rare and localised. At the end of the last century it was thought that the nationally rare Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly, Ischnura pumilio, had also become extinct in the British Isles.
