The rugged coastline of West Wales attracts the largest gathering of breeding Grey Seals, Halichoerus grypus, in southern Britain. Grey Seals are widely distributed in the temperate and sub-arctic seas on both sides of the North Atlantic, and a small population survives in the Baltic. According to current estimates, approximately half of the world population of Grey Seals lands on the shores of the British Isles to breed, mostly around the rocky north and west coasts.
