A quarter-century of rare plants

Rare Plants, due in November, will be the 14th instalment in the British Wildlife Collection series, published by Bloomsbury. The book features a handsome Carry Akroyd jacket and the text is richly illustrated with colour photographs, many of which were taken by the late Bob Gibbons. Here, Peter Marren explains the background to the book and the changing nature of rare plants in Britain.

In the late 1990s, I wrote a book called Britain’s Rare Flowers. It focused on our rarest native plants, the Red-listed ones, on how they got here, who discovered them, and the sorts of places where they grew. It was also about conservation.
