For many people in the south of England, the Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos is the quintessence of spring. The song is both beautiful and ephemeral, lasting only for a few weeks around the main period of leaf burst in the southern woods. Typically, it is heard first in mid April but rapidly wanes towards the end of May. Soon after arrival, many Nightingales sing for much of the night and day.
