"A Great Spotted Woodpecker, a male from its red nape, is a regular visitor to my peanut feeder. It appears several times a day, often heralding its arrival with sharp 'chik' calls. I have never seen the female, and this may be because she has a separate foraging area. In late June there was excitement because the woodpecker brought one of its offspring. Apart from the identifying red on the crown rather than the nape, it was obviously a fledgling from its general incompetence. At one point, it turned its head to preen its back and fell off the tree.
