Compared with continental Europe, the British Isles has a poor Orthopteran fauna, including 29 native species of ground-hoppers, bush-crickets, crickets, and grasshoppers (Marshall & Haes 1988). Roughly half of these species are restricted to the south of a line drawn from the Bristol Channel to the Wash.
