Walk past almost any unpolluted pond on a sunny day in late summer and one may very likely encounter a darter dragonfly. Most often they will be seen basking on a bare patch of ground, the surface of a fallen log or perched high on the tip of a stem. Aptly named because of their style of flight, they will characteristically make brief, rapid sorties perhaps to see off another dragonfly intruder or to catch prey.
