Clubmosses are the descendants of an ancient group of plants which dominated the landscape in the Carboniferous Coal Measure swamps some 300 million years ago. From their fossil record, we know that some were 45m tall and, from the density of those remains, were the dominant plant in vast areas of primeval forest. None reaches that stature today.
