In many areas Juniper, Juniperus communis, fails to regenerate. For example, until recently, the youngest specimens at Teesdale NNR were estimated at over 50 years old. The warden, Ian Findlay, discovered from talking to an old resident that in the past Juniper was sometimes cut and used for firewood, or as bases of hay ricks or even as a substitute for barbed wire along the tops of stone walls.
