Comment: The urban wild: a perspective from Northern England
Ian D. Rotherham
Pages 89-96
The implementation of conservation projects in remote ‘wild’ areas is insufficient as a sole response to contemporary environmental challenges. Ian D. Rotherham foregrounds the importance of ‘wilding’ urban areas.
On 11th July 2007, a UN report stated that, for the first time in human history, most of the world’s population lived in urban areas (Satterthwaite 2007). This creates problems for environmental recovery both through direct destruction and fragmentation of habitats to make space for development, and also by depriving people of contact with nature.
