The wilding debate and the coastal zone: never the twain shall meet?

Enormous numbers of people visit the UK’s coasts for a bit of wildness, even to experience the feel of wilderness. It is easy to see why: waves crashing against granite cliffs, wind whipping the sand up across wide beaches, the glint of sun on apparently endless mudflats with flocks of waders swirling in the sky.
