Travellers on the M1 motorway through the East Midlands will have noticed a prolonged climb as they approach Loughborough, when a range of hills comes into view. This elevated ground (above 120m) bordered by Leicester, Loughborough and Ashby-de-la-Zouch is known as Charnwood Forest.
