In the sixth article in our Wilding for Conservation series, the UK’s first rewilding charity, Rewilding Britain, outlines how it believes rewilding can contribute to the recovery of nature, and presents a selection of projects that are currently experimenting with wilder approaches to conservation.
The momentum behind rewilding has surged in Britain over the past 18 months, amid growing awareness of the urgent need for action to tackle the global biodiversity crisis and climate breakdown. Drastic and ongoing declines in wildlife are tragic in their own right, but they also threaten the prosperity and wellbeing of current and future generations: the National Ecosystem Assessment (http://uknea.unep-wcmc. org) highlighted the fact that at least 30% of ecosystem services are in decline and the Dasgupta Review (2021) supports this, stating that the stock of natural capital per person has declined by nearly 40% in Britain.
