The national Water Vole survey undertaken in 1989-90 found that Water Voles Arvicola terrestris were no longer present at 67% of sites from which they were formerly known. It was further estimated that by 2000, at a similar rate of decline, Water Voles would have disapeared from up to 94% of previously occupied sites (Strachan & Jefferies 1993).
