In the ten fields of the 20-acrea (8ha) north Hampshire smallholding which I manage as a nature reserve are many of the elements of the history of the expansions and recessions of the agricultural land-use and economy of lowland agriculture over the last 400 years. This article looks at the effect of the ebb and flow of agricultural fortunes on this fragment of land and the problems of managing it for wildlife in the late 20th century.
