British naturalists have to suffer not only our cool, wet Atlantic climate but also its biological consequences: a fauna and flora which in many groups is depleted compared with those of sunnier lands to the south. The major exceptions to this depressing generalisation are those groups which flourish in wet or moist conditions. Aquatic plants are onr such group, and Britain's aquatic flora stands comparison with that of most areas of Europe.
