Plants in rivers fulfil many vital roles as well as having a conservation significance in their own right. Submerged species provide shelter from predation for small fish and many aquatic invertebrates. They are also the substrates on which many invertebrates and coarse fish such as Pike, Roach and Bream lay their eggs. In uniform rivers, the structural variety of plants creates a diversity of niches for the animal life.
