"Richard Fitter, the prolific writer of field guides, died on 3rd September, aged 92. His name must be familiar to every reader of British Wildlife. I tried counting the number of books I have by Fitter and it came to at least nine. In all he wrote nearly 30 books, including two of the first and most popular field guides, the Collins Pocket Guides to British Birds (1952) and to Wild Flowers (1956)."
