One of the most urgent problems in butterfly conservation, and one which has serious implications for a wide variety of wildlife, is the rapid decline of Britain’s fritillaries. We have eight resident species (Table 1) which all have distinctive chequered markings and, like the Snakeshead Fritillary flower, Fritillaria meleagris, are named after the pattern on ancient dice-boxes.
