Somerset is one of the most varies counties in England, with rolling hills, heather moorland and flat, marshy plains. It contains such jewels as the Quantick Hills, Exmoor and the Mendips, but amongst the most extraordinary is its hollow heart. The Somerset Levels and Moors is a great area of country which is below sea-level for part of each day. Every acre of this land has been reclaimed and is kept from inundation only by an elaborate system of sea-walls, drains, rhynes, ditches and pumps.
