Gross reductions in the area of most semi-natural habitats in Britain in the past half-century have been well documented, as have the resulting population declines and range retractions of many individual species. Comparable processes have been widely identified elsewhere in Western Europe. Many adverse factors have been involved, but the most pervasive has been the intensification of agriculture.
